Inspired in part by Kågerman’s own experiences as a journalist at Vice Magazine and the literary work Die Gelehrtenrepublik by German author Arno Schmidt, this film unfolds in a meticulously crafted alternative reality where the Cold War never concluded, its tense standoff persisting into an era of perpetual geopolitical unease. In this alternate timeline, a cataclysmic event has shattered the fragile peace: an atomic bomb has detonated in Soviet Kazakhstan, leaving a swathe of destruction and contamination in its wake. The story centers on a young Swedish club-goer, whose life is unexpectedly upended when she secures a position at one of the most avant-garde and influential magazines on the global stage. This high-profile gig, however, comes with a dangerous twist: she is immediately tasked with infiltrating the restricted exclusion zone surrounding the bomb’s impact site—a mission fraught with peril and shrouded in the secrecy of a world still locked in ideological conflict. As she navigates the treacherous boundary between journalistic curiosity and personal survival, the film weaves together themes of disinformation, cultural identity, and the blurred lines between truth and fiction, all set against the backdrop of a world where history diverged dramatically from our own.
